Great Expectations
Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard has filed a lawsuit against Sun West Video Inc., operating as the dating service Great Expectations, after numerous consumer complaints.
The suit, filed June 18, alleges that Great Expectations "used coercive sales tactics, misrepresentations and other deceptive practices to sell expensive dating service memberships to Arizona consumers, typically costing thousands of dollars," according to a press release.
Great Expectations marketing manager said the allegations against the company are untrue.
"The case has no merit," she said. "We are looking forward to it going to trial."
Specific allegations by the AG include the company's failure to conduct criminal background checks on members; inappropriate use of customers' credit information; and misrepresenting the number of members of the service.
The suit asks that the dating service, which has one Arizona location in Scottsdale, be penalized up to $10,000 for each violation of the Arizona Consumer Fraud Act, and that it return any money to customers gained through illegal acts.
Attorney General press secretary Andrea Esquer would not comment on the case, but said the suit would "achieve relief for consumers."
Great Expectations has been operating in Arizona for about 15 years, and has about 50 other locations nationwide.
